RE:Harrier GearBox Problem

I've finally found a place where I don't feel 'alone' anymore..and yes...it's the Gear Box of my G1 Harrier.

After sending some time reading all those forums, I finally realize that it is such a common issue with all G1 Harriers on the road. I too, like tploh, have spent a huge amount of $$ overhauling my gear box. However, mine was somewhat different...it has been quite smooth all along (with the gear shift problem) until the gear box totally broke down all of a sudden one day. I was told by a few different mech that I either need to change of overhaul the gear box as it can't be saved anymore. I finally decided to overhaul which has caused me a bomb $$ which I thought can solve the prob. But after getting the car, the prob that plague you guys (gear shift from 3rd to 4th) started. It sort of 'choke' everytime the gear shifts and the problem never ceases even when the engine is hot. Am I having a whole new issue compared to those of you guys?? Please advise anyone...

RE:Harrier GearBox Problem   Hi! SuNzHi. I'm hav been offline. Sorry aa. The place i go is a friends Acc Shop. VS does help for aged cars like mine(i installed Pivot Red VS). i think the Purple Mega Raisin VS is even better. Post ur experience if u hav installed it for comparison.
I installed Pivot Raizin (Blue) yesterday. My headlights are brighter now, but my gear still can't shift from 3rd to 4th for the first 2 minutes in the morning. Guess that my search for solution ocntinues...
Hi Tploh, If you are referring to the G1 harrier (aka RX300), I have checked with the lexus dealership engineer (in the US) that it is normal that the gears will not shift to 4th when the engine is cold. This is to protect the engine when it is cold. The gearbox has inbuilt intelligence to also hold 3rd gear, on hard acceleration or hill climb,or hill descent when you press hard on the brake; and will continuously learn your style of driving. I use to drive the RX300 when I was in the US, and I also have a G1 Harrier here. Hope this helps.., so I don't think there is anything wrong with your heli.

Been there(branded workshop), Done that(asked lots of mechanics) and finally i discover that cars that are 10 yrs old like mine, needs a heart bypass (Voltage Stabilizer) to keep on going... what i mean is wiring in an old car transfer less voltage compare to new car, at least thats what i'm told. At first thought, i didn't believe it myself either. A simple device could solve it and also all my heli lights as noticeably brighter too. My heli is not those heavily Mod type, just added Pivot VS & K2N fuel enhancer thing. Finally,i'm not advertising for pivot company or any other ACC shop, it's just my experience,ok.
WYK, Can you recommend the workshop that change the VS for u? is this VS help in wiring problem as well?

RE:Harrier GearBox Problem   "BS"... You did not have this issue when you took your car so why now? Nothing has changed, the weather and ambience temperature remains the same... I would ask you to query this to the Japanese Engineer and indicating other same models does not have this issue. There are transmission specialist in town and should obtain a 3rd party second opinion... get opinion only. Typically, if you have the gear shifts issues from 3rd to 4th or 4th to 3rd, it could be a simple problem like a worn out ATF actuator or some wiring - this is the simpliest of forms. Also, did you try flushing your gearbox and replacing the ATF filter inside the gearbox? Also think a couple weeks back before the incident did you go to any accessories shop or servicing where they might have tap the wrong wires for something you installed. Cheers!

He "thinks" that my gear not shifting to 4th while it is still cold in the morning is a Toyota design to protect the engine. he mentioned that the engine will jerk if not enough power ( not hot yet ). So, what a relief for me to hear that. Now, I'm back to all [:D]
